All patients undergoing thyroid surgery by one of the authors (TJF) had thyroid tumor samples collected at the time of surgery. Tumor tissue was dissected by a pathologist and snap frozen in liquid nitrigen and stored at -80C. RNA was extracted, following the manufacturer's protocol, from each sample after homogeneization in TRIzol reagent and RNA clean-up was performed using RNeasy MiniKit.
