WASH complex subunit 5 (WASHC5) acts as a component of the WASH core complex that functions as a nucleation-promoting factor (NPF) at the surface of endosomes, where it recruits and activates the Arp2/3 complex to induce actin polymerization, playing a key role in the fission of tubules that serve as transport intermediates during endosome sorting

Strumpellin contains one known domain called a spectrin repeat that consists of three alpha-helices of a characteriztic length wrapped in a left-handed coiled coil. The spectrin proteins have multiple copies of this repeat, which can then form multimers in the cell. Spectrin associates with the cell membrane via spectrin repeats in the ankyrin protein. The spectrin repeat is a structural platform for cytoskeletal protein assemblies.
