Tracking viruses in West Africa

Harv AIDS Rev. 1997 Spring:6-7.

Abstract

PIP: The largest, most advanced AIDS biomedical facility in West Africa--located in Dakar, Senegal--was established in 1985 through collaboration among the Harvard AIDS Institute, the Universite Cheikh Anta Diop, and two French universities. Biologic, epidemiologic, and clinical studies conducted at the center led to the initial identification of HIV-2, development of a rapid and inexpensive test for HIV-1 and HIV-1, and strategies for integrating AIDS activities with the prevention and treatment of other viral infections. The facility has followed more than 1000 female sex workers in Dakar, Kaolack, and Ziguinchor in order to characterize the spread of HIV-1 and HIV-2.
