HGNC Approved Gene Symbol: RPL6
Cytogenetic location: 12q24.13 Genomic coordinates (GRCh38): 12:112,405,181-112,418,835 (from NCBI)
The mammalian ribosome is composed of 4 RNA species (see 180450) and approximately 80 different proteins.
Zaman (1993) isolated a human lung cancer cell line cDNA encoding ribosomal protein L6 (RPL6). The deduced RPL6 protein has 288 amino acids, of which 24% are basic.
Morita et al. (1993) isolated a human Jurkat cell cDNA encoding RPL6, which they named TAXREB107. Immunoblot analysis using antibodies against RPL6 detected a 34-kD protein in Jurkat cells. The RPL6 protein can bind to the tax-responsive enhancer element of human T-cell leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1).
By somatic cell hybrid and radiation hybrid mapping analyses, Kenmochi et al. (1998) mapped the RPL6 gene to chromosome 12q.
