The drosophila protein tolloid and its Xenopus homologue xolloid cleave and inactivate Sog and chordin, respectively, which are inhibitors of Dpp (the Drosophila decapentaplegic gene product) and its homologue BMP4, involved in dorso-ventral patterning.
